Italian Sausage Patty Melt
We love Patty Melts and have only eaten them out in restaurants! Well I changed that! I had some sausage that I needed to use up and decided on Italian Sausage Patty Melts! They were fantastic and very filling!
Caramelized onions are soooo good! Why I don't make them more often, I don't know! They were so good with the Italian Sausage patties and Italian cheese! Ever since I found the mayo trick on grilled sandwiches, I've never gone back to buttering the bread! It makes the bread so toasty so if you've never tried it, you should!
Great dinner!
1 (16 ounce) roll Italian sausage (I used Bob Evans)
2 Tablespoons butter
1 large onion, sliced into rings
sea salt & pepper, to taste
1 Tablespoon minced garlic
mayo
white bread slices
2 cups shredded Italian cheese blend
To make 4 sandwiches cut the sausage roll into 4 even sections. Make 4 patties. Place in heated skillet and cook covered until done, no pink, 150°, turning occasionally. Drain on paper towel.
While sausage is cooking, melt butter in another skillet and caramelize sliced onions. Cast Iron skillet works great for this. Salt & pepper onions and add garlic when 2-3 minutes are left of cooking time. Cook until onions are nice and browned.
Spread mayo on the outside of each piece of bread. In the same skillet you cooked sausage, clean skillet and place bread, mayo side down in skillet. For each sandwich top one inside (not mayo side) piece of bread with cheese, sausage patty and caramelized onions. When bread is nice and toasty place top piece of bread, toasty side facing out, on top of sausage/onion side.
