Crockpot Smothered Cube Steak
I had some cube steak that I needed to use up and decided to cook it in the crockpot with other ingredients that I had on hand! There's nothing better than coming home from work and dinner is done and the house is smelling fantastic!
When I buy cube steak I like to buy it thin rather than thicker slices! It cooks up so much more tender and melts in your mouth! A great way to get cube steak tender is to soak it in buttermilk for an hour or 2 before cooking but I didn't have any on hand this time! This great tip comes from my late friend Grace (Gaudrey) and she said buttermilk is a great tenderizer for most meats and chicken!
I went recipe hunting for different ways to cook cube steak with what I had on hand and one recipe I found used a mushroom gravy packet which I think would be great for all the mushroom lovers out there but my family are not fans of anything mushroom! I used brown gravy and onion soup packets and it was so tasty! I wish I would of had an Au Jus packet and I bet it would have taken the gravy smothered steak over the top! Comfort food dinner served with cheesy mashed potatoes! Yum!
1 medium onion, sliced into rings
2 Tablespoons Extra Virgin olive Oil
½ cup flour
salt, pepper, seasoned salt, to taste
4 slices thin beef cube steak (about 1 pound)
3 cups water
1 envelope brown gravy mix
1 envelope onion soup & dip mix
Spray crockpot or use a crockpot liner and spray it.
Place sliced onions in bottom of crockpot.
Add oil to a skillet, over medium heat.
Mix flour and spices and dredge steaks on both sides. Place in heated skillet and brown on both sides, about 4 minutes per side.
Remove from skillet and place on top of onions in crockpot.
In the same skillet with all the leftover bits, mix water and gravy mix and onion mix. Pour into crockpot.
Cook on high 4 hours or low for 8 hours or until meat is tender.
