Easy Weeknight Casserole

This was really good and my family enjoyed it! So creamy and cheesy! I can't put my finger on the taste of the cream cheese/sour cream/onion mixture but I know that taste from something and it's driving me crazy trying to pin point it! It may come to me and it may not, but if that's the case, I'll just have to make this again real soon and try to figure it out!
I want to add that I didn't think 8 ounces of noodles were enough since they barely covered the bottom of the 9x13 casserole dish so I stopped mid-stride and cooked the remaining noodles out of a 12 ounce bag and that worked perfect since there is a top layer of noodles as well! I also cut the block of cream cheese right down the middle so I used 4 ounces! Delicious! Served with garlic bread!
1½ pounds lean ground beef
1 (14½ ounce) can diced tomatoes
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon sugar
1½ cups sour cream
3 ounces cream cheese, softened
1/4 cup onion, chopped
12 ounces medium egg noodles, cooked & drained
1½ cups shredded cheddar cheese
Brown beef in a large skillet over medium heat; drain.
Add tomatoes, salt and sugar; reduce to low heat and simmer for 15 minutes. Set aside.
Combine sour cream, cream cheese and onion in a bowl; mix well and set aside. Place half of the cooked noodles in a lightly greased 13×9 baking dish; top with meat mixture, then sour cream mixture. Layer remaining noodles over top.
Sprinkle with cheese and bake at 350 for 25 minutes.
