Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes
Thanks to jmartinelli13 on TOH for posting her review of this recipe!
There are 2 famous sandwich shops in Philly and they are Tony Lukes and Pat's King Of Steaks! Tony loves his provolone cheese and Pat loves his Cheez Whiz so what's a girl to do? Provolone or Cheez Whiz? Well my family likes both cheeses so I made 1 of each, had a taste test and the Cheez Whiz won! The provolone cheese was very mild tasting and the Cheez Whiz had more taste to it!
I personally thought it was best with no cheese on the top! The flavor of the meat with the green peppers and onion was so good! Very flavorful sandwich!
1 pound ground beef, brown & drain
1 medium onion, diced
1 green bell pepper, diced
2 tablespoons worcestershire sauce
1 cup beef broth
Salt and ground black pepper, to taste
4 sub rolls
1 (15 ounce) jar Cheez Whiz
OR
Cheese Sauce
1 tablespoon butter
1 tablespoon flour
1 cup milk
1 cup shredded provolone
In large skillet over medium-high heat brown the ground beef, about 5-6 minutes. Drain. Return to skillet.
Add the onion and green pepper and cook another 3-4 minutes, until the vegetables start to get tender. Stir in the steak sauce and beef broth, season with salt and pepper, bring up to a bubble and cook about 2 minutes.
If using Cheez Whiz, add 1/3 cup to meat mixture.
Toast the rolls and set aside.
For the provolone cheese: While the meat is cooking, melt the butter in a medium-size pot over medium-high heat. Stir in the flour and cook about 1 minute. Whisk in milk, bring up to a bubble and let thicken, about 2 minutes. Turn off heat and stir the cheese.
To serve, place a scoopful of the meat mixture onto the bottom of the rolls, then top with the cheese sauce, either Cheez Whiz or provolone sauce and replace the top of the roll.
