Italian Style Sloppy Joes
The best Sloppy Joe that I've ever eaten! The first time trying a Sloppy Joe like this and it won't be the last! The taste of this was amazing! The tomato sauce with the balsamic vinegar made a great tasting sauce and add in the veggies with the sugar and seasonings and you have the perfect sandwich!
Easy to make!
Recipe adapted from Living The Gourmet
2 pounds ground chuck
1 medium sweet onion, diced
1 medium red bell pepper, diced
1 Tablespoon minced garlic
1 Tablespoon sugar
salt, to taste
red pepper flakes, to taste
extra virgin olive oil
2 cups of tomato sauce
2 Tablespoons balsamic vinegar
spray butter or melted butter or olive oil
Garlic powder, to taste
1½ cups shredded Mozzarella cheese
Dried Oregano
1 cup Parmesan or Romano cheese
Hoagie buns
Heat a large skillet brown and crumble ground chuck. Drain. Set aside.
In the same skillet add onion and bell pepper. Sauté 4-5 minutes. Add garlic and sauté 2 more minutes. Sprinkle veggies with the sugar, salt and red pepper flakes and allow a bit of a char to form on the veggies. When this is achieved drizzle the veggies with olive oil.
Add the 2 cups of sauce to the veggies and toss. Add the balsamic vinegar to the sauce and toss. Taste for seasonings. Add the cooked ground chuck to skillet and mix well.
Let the mixture simmer on a gentle heat while preparing the rolls.
To Prepare the Rolls
Spray buns with butter or brush each bun with olive oil. Sprinkle each side of the bun with garlic powder, and dried oregano. Bake or grill until slightly toasty.
Place shredded mozzarella on each side of the roll and fill with the hot ground chuck mixture.
Top with Parmesan or Romano cheese.
