Cold Cubano Sandwich
The hot Cuban sandwich is served similar to this recipe but it has roast pork and the cold version has ham and salami! I researched the Cuban Sandwich, hot and cold and a Cuban sandwich is a variation of a ham and cheese sandwich that originated in cafes catering to Cuban workers in Key West and Ybor City, Tampa, two early Cuban immigrant communities in Florida. Later on, Cuban exiles and expatriates brought it to Miami, where it is also still very popular. The sandwich is made with ham, roasted pork, Swiss cheese, pickles, mustard, and sometimes salami on Cuban bread. Salami is an important ingredient for Cuban sandwiches made in Tampa, where there is a large Italian population, but is not usually included in South Florida.
We love eating sandwiches and we don't do it as much as we would like to! I've been making different sandwiches at work and this is one of them! They went over very well with the customers and some said it was their first time trying any Cuban! Awesome!
Anyway, I think mustard is great on ham and salami and if you've never had shredded cabbage on a sandwich, you don't know what you're missing! The crunch of it is soooo good! Way better than any lettuce!
Recipe from FINDING HOME
2 slices Italian bread
1 ounce sliced deli ham
4-6 slices salami
Swiss cheese
dill pickle slices
mustard, to taste
mayonnaise, to taste (I only used mustard and no mayo)
about 1 cup shredded cabbage
Spread mustard on one slice of bread and mayonnaise on the other. Top the mustard with ham, salami, cheese then pickle slices. Top the mayonnaise with cabbage.
Carefully combine the two by flipping the mustard/meat side onto the cabbage and press down to help the ingredients stay in.
Slice in half and serve.
